Your focus in your essay will be to focus as much on How the reflection is written as much as What it is about. That is, you will speculate how the verbal style of the reflection relates to its possible meaning.

Select any ONE reflection you have read in Reflections to date, from Section 3 (Career is a Forking Path), Section 4 (Connecting/Disconnecting), or Section 5 (Lessons Learned). Your focus in your essay will be to focus as much on How the reflection is written as much as What it is about. That is, you will speculate how the verbal style of the reflection relates to its possible meaning. • Verbal Elements to consider: point of view (e.g. first, second or third person), verb tenses (present, past, future, passive, word choice (diction), sentence length (short versus long), sentence rhythm or pace, punctuation, paragraph length and development, metaphors/imagery, and whatever else you find about the language use that affects your interpretation of the piece. • Also consider the Rhetorical Structure of the reflection. That is, analyze the appeals to Reason, Emotion and Authority/Credibility. See the handout in the handouts folder on The Three Appeals.
