Part II. Demographic Course Synthesis

Once you have finished the summary, tie in aspects of the film you chose with class material as follows.  **NOTE: The more you tie in examples from the films, the better your score will be.  Also, tie in actual material from the class—vocabulary, etc. and CITE IT.**

CHOOSE TWO (2) OF THE CATEGORIES BELOW

A. Gender – This section should be at least 1 page and contain at least four citations.

  • How is gender portrayed in the film? (For example, which gender(s) are the main characters?  How are they socialized into their gender roles?)
  • How are the characters socialized into their expected gender roles? (Females as feminine, etc.)
  • How do they challenge gender roles?
  • Overall, does the film promote gender roles or transgress them? How?

B. Race/Ethnicity – This section should be at least 1 page and contain at least four citations.

  • How is race/ethnicity portrayed in the film? (For example, which racial/ethnic groups are the main characters vs. the additional cast?)
  • How are racial stereotypes emphasized in the film? How are they challenged? Provide at least two examples of each.
  • Are interracial (between races/ethnic groups) relationships recognized? How?  Are they primarily friendships or are more intimate relationships present?  What do other characters say (or not say) about them?
  • Overall, does the film promote racial and ethnic differences or deemphasize them? How? 

C. Social Class – This section should be at least 1 page and contain at least four citations.

  • How is social class portrayed or shown in the film? What is the assumed social class of the main characters vs. the additional cast?  How can you tell?  
  • Are social class stereotypes portrayed in the film? If they are not, why do you think this is?
  • Overall, what does the film portray regarding social class? Does this agree with or contradict the lecture material and readings from class?    

D. Sexuality/Sexual Orientation – This section should be at least 1 page and contain at least fourcitations.

  • How is sexuality and/or sexual orientation portrayed or shown in the film? What is the assumed (or stated) sexual orientation of the main characters vs. the additional cast?  How can you tell?  
  • Are stereotypes related to sexuality and sexual orientation portrayed in the film? If they are not, why do you think this is?
  • Overall, what does the film portray regarding sexuality/sexual orientation? Does this agree with or contradict the lecture material and readings from class?

B. Health & Aging – This section should be at least 1 page and contain at least two citations.

  • What message(s) does the film give about the institution of marriage? About families in society? What is ‘normal’ vs. ‘abnormal’ in the film? How can you tell?
  • Do these messages change or stay the same throughout the movie? Why do you think that is?
  • How do these messages about marriage and/or families compare to class lecture and readings?

C. Education & Religion – This section should be at least 1 page and contain at least two citations.

  • Do these messages change or stay the same throughout the movie? Why do you think that is?
  • How do these messages about crime and deviance compare to class lecture and readings?

Your entire paper should be at LEAST four (4) pages double-spaced with at least ten (10) direct course citations. Any less will be subject to point reductions.
