ENGL 1020 • W3
Paper 5 Assignment
Subject: T.S. Eliot, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.”
Topic: The speaker of T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” is considered one of the most memorable voices in twentieth-century poetry. In an essay of 700 – 750 words, describe what you believe to be Prufrock’s three most important characteristics. These can be personality traits, beliefs, attitudes, fears, etc. For each, you will need to: 1) show how Eliot uses a distinct poetic technique to convey that character trait, and 2) analyze a passage from the poem by way of example. The three techniques you discuss can be any of those covered in Unit 3, namely: tone, similes, metaphors, rhyme, or alliteration and assonance.
Evaluation: Your paper will be evaluated according to:
- The strength of your central claim (Prufrock’s three chief characteristics)
- The quality of your close readings and their effectiveness as supporting evidence
- Your understanding of poetic terminology
- The clarity of your prose style and the correctness of your grammar
