By the 1990s, women were enjoying the benefits of higher education and entrance into the corporate world, working as doctors, lawyers, professors and politicians, as well as competing in most major sports. However, for the majority of working women in the United States, their pay scale for the same work done by a male was significantly lower than their male counterparts. Furthermore, the feminist movement had been thwarted, criticized and held back enough that females had to endure sexual harassment, physical and mental abuse, and received less credit and fame as male actors and athletes.
