Then, write a reframe for each. See example below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Disputant\u2019s comment: \u201c<\/strong>This neighborhood is becoming a mess. My neighbor is such a pig. I can hardly control myself when he leaves that trash all over his front year after one of his drunken parties\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A student may paraphrase as:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cYou think he is messy\u201d or \u201cYou wish he were neater.\u201d&nbsp;<em>However, emotional paraphrases are about the person making the statement rather than one person\u2019s thoughts about the other person.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A better emotional paraphrase is<\/strong>: \u201cYou feel disappointed\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A good reframe that changes or neutralizes the disputant\u2019s negative words is:<\/strong>&nbsp;So, \u201cYou\u2019d like a neat neighborhood\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Write an emotional paraphrase and reframe for each comment below:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#1 Mediator\u2019s Question: \u201cWhat is a good neighbor?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disputant\u2019s Comment: \u201cWell, to be a good neighbor, I think you have to have respect for those around you. Maybe not just tell someone [said with sarcasm] \u2018You\u2019ll&nbsp;<em>think<\/em>&nbsp;about it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emotional Paraphrase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reframe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#2 Mediator\u2019s Question: \u201cWhat brought you to mediation?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disputant\u2019s Comment: \u201cI\u2019ve had enough with this degenerate\u2019s loud parties that go on all night every weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emotional Paraphrase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reframe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#3 Mediator\u2019s Question: \u201cWhere are your houses located in relationship to each other?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disputant\u2019s Comment: \u201cWay too close!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emotional Paraphrase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reframe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#4 Disputant\u2019s Comment: \u201cShe really let the group down on this project. Keep in mind that an opening statement is not a random collection of words. There are&nbsp;<strong>Key Components of the Opening Statements<\/strong>&nbsp;that must be included (revisit your textbook p.96 -104). Plus, you must consider the online environment: What will you include&nbsp; to tell the parties. For example, Figure 6.1 Sample Opening Statement , p.97 was written for an in-person mediation session and &nbsp;states: &nbsp;\u201c If you need a break ,let me know. Bathrooms are just across the hall\u201d. An online mediator would say: \u201c If you need a break ,let me know. We will pause the video call&nbsp; and resume after everyone is back on camera\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another consideration, &nbsp;<strong>What \u201cground rules\u201d will you include for&nbsp; your&nbsp; online mediation?<\/strong>&nbsp;For example, all parties must be visible and on camera during the mediation session or audio must be turned off, unless you are speaking, etc. Think about other \u201c ground rules\u201d to include in&nbsp; your opening statement to ensure a seamless online mediation. Think about grounds rules concerning confidentiality and caucusing, etc in an online environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Discussion Instructions:<\/strong>&nbsp;The attached document contains several paragraphs for an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fiu.instructure.com\/courses\/111567\/files\/17317654?wrap=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Opening Statement&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/fiu.instructure.com\/courses\/111567\/discussion_topics\/1165464#\">Actions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Select the paragraphs you need to create your own mediator online opening statement for your next online mediation session. You can edit the phrases, recreating your own personal opening statement. Your opening statement must be be one-page long and titled: \u201c My Online Opening Statement\u201d. Remember, your opening statement must include all the key components of an opening statement.<\/li><li>Write a brief justification about the things you chose to include in your online opening statement.
