RE: ORAL PRESENTATION ACTIVITY
Dear Students,
Every semester, INGL 3101 students are assigned an oral presentation activity which
requires you to do research and incorporate three (3) academic resources (references)
from our library.
Based on your readings, the student may write as many questions as possible and
answer them, for this will help guide the student while writing his\/her paragraphs of the
essay.
VERY IMPORTANT: The Information Competencies must be demonstrated within the
presentation using in-text citations (direct citations and indirect citations) and a Works
Cited page (References) using MLA format\u2014which is the last page of your written
presentation.
This year our oral presentation topic will be: \u201cHate Crimes.\u201d When we refer to hate
crimes, we refer to the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Gender:
    a. Men killing women<\/li>
  2. Sexual Orientation:
    a. Men targeting and killing Gay men
    b. Transgenders being attacked<\/li>
  3. Race\/Color
    a. Attack on African Americans
    b. Asian Americans
    c. Chinese
    d. Latino Communities<\/li>
  4. Religion
    a. Jewish
    b. Islamic
    c. Arabs
    d. Catholics
    e. Protestants
    The student will choose a specific topic within hate crimes and then commence his\/her
    research on the topic. After reading various academic articles, newspapers, and\/or
    other academic sources, the student will select three solid references from academic
    articles, newspapers, and\/or other academic sources from the UPRRP library, to write
    his\/her essay. These articles will help the student formulate his\/her thesis statement, to
    then defend his\/her position or argument.

    Your Three Sources
    The student, for example, will mention what each of his\/her different sources state on
    the topic chosen; what you personally think or feel about the topic; how does the author
    of each of your three references feel about the topic? What does the student think the
    respective authors of each article are trying to tell the reader?
    These are only some possible guide questions that may help the student. The student
    may add additional questions to his\/her list. Based on your readings, the student should
    write as many questions as possible, for this will help the student write his\/her essay.
    (Note: use essay structure.)
    The writing should include a reference page with the three academic references in MLA
    style.
    Once the student has written his\/her four-five paragraph essay on the specific topic
    chosen, he\/she will then prepare the oral presentation.
    ORAL PRESENTATION
    \u2022 Once the writing is done, the student is ready to prepare the oral presentation.
    \u2022 The student will present the same with a clear tone of voice and in a natural manner-
    –without reading it\u2014as if the student were speaking to the Professor.
    \u2022 He\/She will then ask someone to videotape him\/her with a mobile phone.
    \u2022 The student will present his\/her arguments with details; in this manner,
    demonstrating the knowledge she\/he has attained.
    \u2022 Once the video is ready, the student will upload the video to OneDrive (UPRRP) and
    send the link to the professor.
    \u2022 The professor will read the written part of the presentation and then listen to the oral
    presentation.
    \u2022 The professor will ask the student to erase the link after listening to the same.

    Third Argument\/Explanation: ________<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>
    Conclusion: You restate your thesis statement and VERY briefly tell the reader what you
    set out to prove and how you proved it by repeating in a very brief manner your three
    explanations (arguments). If you found something that shocked you, which you were not
    aware of–you can also tell the reader about your surprise, and experience doing your
    investigation. You can also explain how victims of hate crimes can or cannot manage to
    survive these hate crimes. These are just examples of what the student can also do.
