This short essay allows students to explore how cultural ideas and practices are structured into language. Students will assemble a taxonomy of words that illustrate the particular terminology used by a selected community of practice or speech community. For instance, you might consider the words used in a hobby or pastime, like surfing or playing roleplaying games. You might think about disciplinary categories, like different types of baked goods or positions on a sports team. Consider terms used in a bilingual family or within a specific occupations, like dentistry or law enforcement. Think about the ways in which our language emphasizes certain elements of these cultural groups and practices. This short essay should be two to four pages in length, with 12 point font, Times New Roman, double spaced and with one-inch margins. Use MLA style formatting. Here are the assignment learning objectives: Students will select and define ten (10) words for analysis. Students will report on the cultural significance these words hold within the specific community of practice. This allows students to demonstrate how language encodes those features of the social or physical environment that have cultural emphasis. For each term selected, students will write a sentence using the term in a manner appropriate to the selected subcultural community. This will demonstrate how the words acquire and convey social meanings that frame experiential narratives. Students will write a paragraph describing the subcultural community of practice or speech community from which this taxonomy is derived. This allows students to explore the concepts of \u201ccommunities of practice\u201d and \u201csubcultures\u201d in which these words reflect experiential cultural emphasis. Finally, students will offer a Peer Review which will be randomly assigned assigned through Canvas. The point value of this short essay is up to 10 points. The points are allocated as follows on this checklist: A collection of ten words from a specific \u201csubcultural\u201d group or \u201ccommunity of practice.\u201d This collection needs to include each words\u2019 meaning. (5 points) A sentence using each word, illustrating its contextual usage. (1 point) A paragraph describing the community from which this lexicon is drawn.
