WK14 – Nursing Leadership & Management

What is Policy?

This is a decisive plan of action or inaction whose development is aimed at dealing with a problem or an issue of concern in a private or public organization. Since it involves addressing issues of immense concern, policy involves authoritative decision making with the objective of developing lasting solutions (Weiss & Tappen, 2015).

Explain each of them:

Public policy is a course of action or inaction in the form of a legislation that affects individual institutional behavior with the objective of addressing local, state, or federal issues (Weiss & Tappen, 2015).

Private policy is an institutional or agency ruling addressing employment issues through directives, procedures, or guidelines (Weiss & Tappen, 2015)

Health policy is a course of action within health care that is focused on issues such as health care resources, reimbursement, and services that have a relationship with private or public health care institutions (Weiss & Tappen, 2015).

Social policy includes authoritative decision-making processes aimed at the promotion and addressing issues related to public welfare.

Organizational policy entails a course of action or positions taken by organizations such as the American organization for registered nurses (AORN) to address issues related to the organization and its membership. Such issues focus on the ability of the members to execute their responsibilities (Weiss & Tappen, 2015).

Who was Florence Nightingale, and what was her contribution to the Nursing Field?

Florence Nightingale was a visionary leader in nursing who through her political engagement was successful in lobbying for the provision of safer health care. Through her expertise in statistics, she was involved in the collection of data on the essence of using infection control when practicing nursing. Policy makers used her skills and information in changing nursing practice (Weiss & Tappen, 2015).

Who was Lillian Wald?

Lillian Wald was a leader in the 20th century nursing movement who advocated for the provision better health care in the society. Part of her contribution was the acquisition of financial resources for private duty nursing. She successful helped in the creation of the Henry Street Settlement and an institution for nursing program, which was instrumental in the initiation of the concept of public health nursing. Wald was therefore a nursing visionary who created a policy targeting the improvement of health care services in the society (Weiss & Tappen, 2015).

Who was Margaret Sanger, and in what way she helped to the developments of Nursing Field?

Margaret Sanger was amid 20th century visionary leader in nursing because of her role in changing the perception of the nation on family planning. She conducted her sensitization programs by distributing literature to women on the techniques of preventing unwanted pregnancies. Her proactive plans were instrumental in reducing maternal death and infections resulting from illegal abortions. Her efforts culminated in the need for policy change characterized by the legalization of birth control in 1965 by the Supreme Court (Weiss & Tappen, 2015)

What is (ICN) and what they do?

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) is responsible for ensuring quality patient care, development of sound health policies that focus of advancing nursing knowledge and improved reputation of the nursing profession globally (Weiss & Tappen, 2015). 

What is (NLCA) and they do?

The Nurse Licensure Compact Administrators is responsible for the protection of the health and safety of the public through the promotion of compliance with the policies and laws that govern nursing practice. Through NCLA nurses, operate under mutual recognition, which allows them to engage in nursing practice across state line unless restricted (Weiss & Tappen, 2015).

Which stage of the policy model does this scenario represent?

The scenario represents stage four of the policy model. This is the leadership stage is considered as the highest level of political involvement. Jeanne Bluum, a resident nurse, recognizes that she has a responsbility towards the nursing profession in ensuring that the policies developed are sound and they respect the profession (Weiss & Tappen, 2015). She demonstrates her leadership capabilities by seeking the insight of her coworkers concerning the policy legalizing the role of nurses in performing premature rapturing of membrane among laboring patients. She collects data and reports to the concerned authorities. Her involvement in policymaking demonstrates the role of nursing leaders in advocating for patients in policymaking (Mason et al, 2016).
