For this essay, you will compose an Informative & Surprising Essay. Your essay should present 
both a common view and a surprising view of your topic. (Considerably more time/space should 
be devoted to explaining your surprising view because your reader is probably already familiar 
with the common view.) Your paper must have a clear claim, and it should be organized in a 
logical fashion that is easy for your reader to follow and understand. (You may be organize your 
ideas around a central thesis, or you may rely on other organizational strategies or techniques.)

Your must use research as you construct your essay. A minimum of 4 sources is required, two 
of which must be scholarly sources accessed through the library databases. You may use more 
than four sources in your essay; all sources must reliable, credible, and cited within your essay, 
both on the Works Cited page and within the text itself.

Your essay should follow the basic structure of closed form prose (introduction with a thesis, 
body of the paper, conclusion). Outside research is required, and all sources must be cited on 
your Works Cited page. Your essay should be 4-7 typed pages in length, use Standard American 
English, and follow the conventions and requirements of MLA style.
