The assignment task
You are a member of a newly formed World Health Organisation (WHO) committee with a task to reconsider existing control measures/interventions in an effort to improve the health of populations. Your task is to address problem or outbreak with Malaria and write a report on it. This report will serve as background information for discussion and as input for the final WHO recommendation on Malaria.
The learning outcomes of this assignment are to:
- Recognize the impact of infectious diseases on populations within a local or global context;
- Evaluate existing measures to control and prevent infectious diseases;
- Recommend suggestions for improvement of existing control measures;
- Describe a communication strategy for the improved control measure
Your report should include the following details:
- Introduction
What is the context for this infectious disease issue/outbreak? (is the focus globally, Australia or a particular country), why is it of concern (set the context for why you have selected the particular infectious disease)
- Characteristics of the problem for an affected population/sub-group
Who is at risk from this infectious disease issue/outbreak – describe the population/sub group that is affected, why are they are risk?
- Selection of existing control measures
What are the existing approaches to control the infectious disease?
o select and describe two (2) different control measures e.g. policy, legislation, isolation,
quarantine, preventative treatment (not to treat the case) etc. This needs to be supported by evidence
4. Rationale for effectiveness of existing control measures (Evaluation)
Have the control measures been evaluated?
o why do they work/don’t work (provide evidence to support the measures you have
selected related to whether they are effective or not)
5. Recommend suggestions for improvement of existing control measures
Suggest a control measure that should be implemented to prevent the infectious disease in the affected population/subgroup
o describe why this control measure would protect this population (supported with evidence)
6. Communication strategy of the proposed control measure to the affected population
Based on the population/subgroup that you have described, use the template to complete sections under all the headings.
