Hello Prof. Wendy and Classmates,
I define corporate social responsibility (CSR) as the responsibilities that companies or corporates have towards the society and environment around them, such as improving the welfare of the society by providing them with essential services or products for free and preserving the environment.
Coca-Cola is a company that has proved to be accountable to itself, its stakeholders, and the public based on what it has been doing to make a positive difference in the local communities and society they operate. Based on its “2020 Business & Environmental Social and Governance Report,” Coca-Cola has highlighted some of the goals it has achieved and focused to achieve over the years (1). They are on a journey to drive progress against intersecting priorities like water and building resilient communities. It has developed a science-based 2030 water strategy that is focusing on achieving water security in all areas in which it operates.
At this time when the world is facing the issue of the COVID-19 pandemic, Coca-Cola has redirected a big part of its marketing spending for community relief programs, medical supplies and equipment during the outbreak phase and developing other actions for recovery and back-to-normal phases in the market hit by the pandemic, where it has spent over $100 million (2). I consider this as a demonstration of CSR and applaud Coca-Cola for this initiative. It took part in helping the community in the fight against COVID-19. These findings and others have made me continue supporting the Coca-Cola company for I believe they mean well to the communities in which they operate.
