Each film is about intelligence, and who measures up, and inheritance and how that works, and where does intelligence come from. And what does intelligence mean anyway.
And in that, where is the human center/core. And by that I mean, what makes us human?
Temple Grandin tells the story of an autistic person born in the 1950s when autism was little understood and blamed on the mother in many cases. She goes from being the the object of science, she is the one being studied, to being the scientist herself, a person who studies.
That arc, for me, drives the story and provides a real model of how to accommodate difference in the actual world.
”’ Pay attention to the kids who are weird. They have a lot of the answers (me paraphrasing Temple Grandin in a lecture).
Gattaca (letters of the base pairs of DNA) is a dystopian fiction about a near future where humans can control inherited traits.
Ex Machina is a science fiction film about a highly advanced AI.
