Most of the examples discussed in class (K-mart, Blockbuster, Books-a-Million, Chevrolet Nova, etc.) looked in hindsight.  We examined how companies failed to examine/accept future changes in their environments, innovate and be proactive, and their resulting demise.  For this project you will analyze a currently successful company and “play” CEO conducting analysis and making decisions for continued future success. 

For this project you will perform SWOT analysis on the internal and external environments for Wal-mart identifying Strengths and Weaknesses (internal) and Opportunities and Threats (external).  For example, the well documented recent poor customer service (weakness in the internal employee environment) and consumers continued shift to online shopping at companies such as Amazon (threat in the external competitive environment) would be good examples to include in your analysis.  You should conduct your analysis on both the short and long-term.  Use magazine and internet articles, blogs, opinions as well as your own analysis of future changes in the environments.

From your analysis use the management principles learned in this class to recommend strategies for capitalizing on the strengths and opportunities and minimizing the weaknesses and threats.  Then create a plan to implement your strategy.  Be specific, thorough and cite the management principles for each recommendation.
