In “The Things They Carried,” many of the things the men carry help define them as individuals. Carefully consider what each man carries. What are some of the more interesting items? Which “things” are unexpected? What do they mean to the character? How do they help define him, meaning what do they tell us about him or how do they establish some aspect of his personality or psyche? Do any things change or come to reflect something different about the character?
Choose one of the characters below and provide a character analysis based on the things he carries. Focus on two or three specific items and explain HOW each item helps define that character. Use the questions above as a guide to your discussion and analysis. Cite references properly, which means cite any description or evidence that supports your conclusions.
