Research Activity: Find (research) an academic article on one of the stories that we have read during this semester.DO: Read it, write the main point of the author (what is the article’s thesis?), say what new information you learned about the story that it refers to. Include a quote from the article in your essay and, say why the quote is important to your understanding of the literature. Disagree with one of the author’s point. Say whether you would recommend the article (or not).Don’t: Do not summarize the article, do not re-tell the story, do not write about the author of the article nor about the author of the story. The point of this exercise is for you to read an article from a reputable critic and show me that you understood what you read.Write four pages in your best English. Site your source in MLA format.Some points that are important to include in your critique:

  • The author’s name, article’s date, title and other bibliographic information.
  • Give a personal reflection on the article. Critique it; don’t summarize it.
  • What is the critic’s thesis or central concern? Does it deepen your thoughts on the literature?
  • What particular area of research or specific point of view does the critic focus on?
  • Discuss the strength and weakness of the article.
  • Is the article well written? Is it written clearly?
  • What assumptions does the critic make? How do these assumptions weaken or strengthen the critic’s thesis?
  • What is the message of the article? What is the point of the author arguing on that issue?
  • What arguments are used to persuade the readers to agree with the author?
  • What evidence is used to support the argument?
  • Add additional information that you think is pertinent.
