Instructions Watch the Discovery Channel documentary First In Human, Episode 1 “Admission”
This documentary follows four patients through their experience with a first in human trial: Bo Cooper under treatment for relapsed leukemia; Anita McAllister who has metastatic melanoma; Deidra Williams who suffers from Sickle Cell Anemia; and Lucy Wiese who has Job’s Syndrome. Select one of the patents to focus on throughout the documentary. Take notes on their experience as you watch the documentary and keep the questions below in mind as you watch. *Quick note: Ezekiel Emmanuel (the co-author of one of our textbooks) is briefly interviewed in this episode.

1. As you watch this documentary make notes of all the ways the ethical dimensions/frameworks you read about in Chapter 11 link up with documentary.
2. After you make your notes, select one or two of these examples answer the following questions in your discussion post:
a) Identify and explain the specific ethical dimensions from the reading that were represented in the documentary. Select at least two of elements of the framework to deeply explore.
b) Summarize your selected patient’s experience. Explain how and why this ethical dimension is important and how your selected patient experienced it (if possible) or how this element was portrayed in the documentary.
c) Explain your thoughts on the key tension surrounding clinical research: asking some to undergo, at times, extreme risk in order to bring some benefit to others or society, in light of what you learned in this documentary.
