Assignment Description:

One of the course learning goals of College English is to analyze post-secondary sources. In order to achieve this learning goal, it is important that we accurately understand the main message of a text and present the author’s ideas in an objective and unbiased way.  

For this assignment you will write an academic summary paragraph (part 1) AND a critical reflection paragraph (part 2) based on the assigned article.

Read and annotate the reading below for this assignment:

  1. The Secret Life of Second-Hand Clothing – By: H.G. Watson

Assignment Directions 

  1. Read and annotate the article
  2. Consider the most important points. Recognize all of the key arguments the author makes in their article. Ignore the minor details and examples.
  3. Write one paragraph that summarizes the key points of the article, and one paragraph that shows your reflection on what you’ve read (2 paragraphs in total).
  4. Refer to the summary paragraph criteria and reflection paragraph criteria below for guidance.
  5. Read over your 2 paragraphs and eliminate any information that’s unnecessary, or add info you think should be included.
  6. Make sure you’ve cited the article in APA.
  7. Be sure to refer to the author a few times.
  8. Double check spelling and grammar.
  9. Ensure your full name and student ID are at the top of the page and that your writing is double spaced.
  10. Submit your assignment in word document through the submission link found in the Assignments folder on BlackBoard. Both paragraphs must be saved in one file.

The Summary Paragraph Criteria

  1. Student has Incorporated the complete title, publication year, author’s full name, and thesis in the first sentence.
  2. Student has Identified the author’s key points only and left out minor details or examples.
  3. The paragraph is concise and to the point (about 1/4 of the original text, or 525 words).
  4. The paragraph has been written in a formal tone.
  5. Student has used their own words only (no direct quotations or improper paraphrasing).
  6. Student uses the present tense.
  7. The order of the summary is logical and follows the order of the original article (chronology is preserved)
  8. Student has not included their own opinions, biases or evaluations of the article.
  9. Student has indented the first sentence of each new paragraph and double spaced their work.

The Critical Reflection Paragraph Criteria

  1. Student has shared their thoughts, opinions, and experiences regarding the article.
  2. Student has made a deep connection between the text and their own personal experiences and prior knowledge on the topic.
  3. Student has commented on the author’s tone, audience, and purpose.
  4. Student has used either one quote (direct quote) OR one paraphrase (indirect quote) in their reflection to support their point.
  5. Student has inserted an APA in-text citation in the body of the paragraph and has added the full reference on their bibliography page (refer to the tutorial video here) This video is also in the APA Help folder on Blackboard.
  6. The paragraph is logically connected, is written in an academic tone, and is 5-8 sentences in length.
  7. Student has Indented the first sentence of each new paragraph and double spaced their work.
