Site/Exhibition Visual Essay

You are asked to plan and undertake a self-guided visit to a site whose history and/or function pertains to the themes and scopes of this class. You can choose a building, an institution (a museum, a university, etc.), a landscape, etc, anywhere in the world you are currently located. You will put into practice some of the analytical skills you have learned throughout the semester, specifically addressing how the ‘long history’ of the site informs its contemporary effects in the current built environment.

You might ask some of the following questions: how has the architectural character of this site affected/influenced/manipulated the community that inhabits its surroundings? What forces have made this site, and how are now legible in its contemporaneity? How has the original design of this site been modified by contemporary use?

During your visit you are required to document your observations, and you can use whatever medium you believe it will better help you produce an effective analysis (video, photographs, interviews, etc). After your visit you will submit a ‘visual’ essay of your visit, in which you will use your own creativity to describe the site through your own original lens. The visual essay can have many formats, and the choice of the medium is in itself part of the grade. This assignment is worth 10% of your Final Grade
