Short Critical Thinking Paper

For this paper, you will investigate a climate change mitigation strategy. You will briefly explain the strategy and then you will discuss its effectiveness. Remember, a mitigation strategy results in cooling by either reducing the amount of GHGs in the atmosphere or through the use of solar radiation management.

Topics: Renewable energy (you should choose two renewable energy sources),  Carbon capture/sequestration strategies, Reforestation/Afforestation, Restoration/Conservation of coastal vegetation,  Non-biological Carbon Captureand Storage technologies, Iron fertilization of oceans, Carbon pricing strategies,  Food/Dietary changes, Solar radiation strategies (like stratospheric aerosols, marine cloud whitening, space mirrors, etc.)

In a critical thinking paper you shouldn’t just report your opinions. You must defend the claims/statements that you make. Use connective words like: because, since, given this argument; thus, therefore, hence, it follows that, consequently; nevertheless, however, on the other hand, but. Use “signposts”, i.e., help make the structure of your paper obvious by telling the reader what you have done so far and what you are going to do next. You can say things like: I will begin by… Further support for this claim comes from… For example…

no more than 750 words in length not including references double spaced 11 or 12 pt. font 2.5 cm (1.0 inch) margins on all sides Suggested format of the paper: Short Opening Paragraph – you should begin with a general statement about the importance of climate change mitigation and then, very briefly, introduce the strategy that you will be discussing. At the end of this paragraph you should clearly state what you will do in the paper, i.e. In this paper I will examine… You might need a short paragraph that describes the strategy Two or three well-crafted paragraphs (each with a distinct focus) that provide the evidence to support (or refute) the effectiveness of the strategy Short Closing Paragraph – summarize your arguments and state your position (is this an effective strategy or not) References – an alphabetical list of your cited references (with proper formatting).

For these reports you will need to search for relevant and reputable information so you should use a search engine like Google Scholar or Web of Science. You must refer to and cite a minimum of four reputable sources, of which at least three must be from the peer-reviewed literature (journal articles).  You can cite websites, but information taken from papers published in peer-reviewed journals is generally better than information obtained from websites. DO NOT cite my lectures; everything I cover in lectures can be found in books and refereed journal articles, or from reputable websites. T
