1 – Attention Step

Use an engaging strategy to gain the audience’s attention (see “Introduction and Terms” for idcveas)
Your Attention Step
So why is sexism a wicked problem? Because sexism is a complex problem that has no clear solution. If there were clear cut answers, sexism would not continue to abound in families, schools, communities and organizations. The dilemma is difficult to solve because of its complicated interdependences, it is also hard to define and has no defined formula with which to resolve the issues. Despite some progress, there is no clear end in sight. The negative impacts of sexism in our workplaces and schools today are far reaching. They are already way out of our control. According toPew Reasearch center, 42% of women in the united states alone say they have faced discrimination on the job because of their gender, 25% say they have earned less than a man who was doing the same job, While 15% of working women say they have received less support from senior leaders than a man who was doing the same job, 54% of women said they have received unwanted sexual advances from a man that they felt were inappropriate whether or not those advances were work-related; 30% said this had happened to them at work, and 35% of women said they have personally experienced sexual harassment or abuse from someone in the workplace. Sexism isnt just saying women shouldnt do something, its treating them different. Treating them wrong.

2 – Problem Step
Explain why this issue is a problem in society:
Make several claims that show the problem
Produce evidence with sources that support your claims

Problem Step Example Claim
We create way too much trash in the United States
Evidence: Each person in America, on average, creates 4.5 pounds of trash each day or 1,600 pounds per year (the same as an adult cow)

Problem Step Claim 1
That people believe that men have more power than women
Evidence: Sex stereotyping can limit the development of the natural talents and abilities of boys and girls, women and men, their educational and professional experiences as well as life opportunities in general. Stereotypes about women both result from and are the cause of deeply engrained attitudes, values, norms and prejudices against women. They are used to justify and maintain the historical relations of power of men over women as well as sexist attitudes which are holding back the advancement of women.

3 – Solution Step
Offer solutions to the problems you addressed:
Make several claims that show the problem
Produce evidence with sources that support your claims

Solution Step Example Claim
We need to incentivize people to put less in the trash bin and recycle more
Evidence: WasteZero, one of the nation’s largest waste reduction companies, promotes a bag-based “pay-as-you-throw” program, which is used already in 800 cities and counties in the United States. The program charges residents a set free in cash for each bag they throw in the drop-off bin. According to WasteZero’s statistics, the program has resulted in an average waste reduction of 44% and often doubles the recycling rates.

4 – Future Step
Design a prediction of what will happen to society if we do something & nothing to change the problem
Make several claims that support this prediction
Produce evidence with sources that support your claims

Future Step Example Claim
The amount of trash in the world will double, creating a major crisis
Evidence: A recent World Bank report projected that the amount of solid waste generated globally will nearly double by the year 2025, going from 3.5 million tons to 6 million tons per day.

5 – Action Step
Supply specific ways for the audience to help solve the problem:
Volunteer
Donate
Support an organization
Call a representative
Give advice on how to be correct when confronted with the issue
(Example: “Next time, if someone tells you a rumor, tell them to stop doing that”
or “If you’ve had too much to drink, call a cab/uber”)
Offer phone numbers, websites, places to go, etc
* Most likely, this part will be near the end of your speech
