Science, Technology and Society

Note: This paper should have 4 major parts and a conclusion. Before starting writing you should do research on      some suggested topics that will give you a background related to the topic. Make sure you keep references where you got the information (such as text book, scientific journal, reputable on-line publications etc.) In the body of the text write the reference number and assemble the references at the end of the paper. History: Background             Questions (Not all inclusive)

What is Energy, a scientific answer? You are familiar with kinetic and potential energy, as defined in the text. Then we had the concept of thermal energy and its implication to thermal processes and engines.

Thermodynamics and development of engines: Steam engine utilizes the energy of steam to perform mechanical.  work. Then there was internal combustion engine (as in today’s automobile). Laws of thermodynamics dictates       efficiencies of engines. Think about second law of thermodynamics that sets the theoretical limits of efficiencies    based on operating conditions.

The discovery of electricity and development of electric motor revolutionized industry. This required electricity, and that was the gift of electromagnetic induction (Faraday’s Law) used in generators. Today, think about a day without electricity. Research prominent names in the field of electromagnetism and the electric revolution.

How does induction work to create electricity? A coil of many turns has to turn in a magnetic field and that produces electricity. The question is how to turn the coil? What type of energy is used to achieve that? Research pros and  cons of these sources in terms of efficiency and impacts on the environment.

Other forms of electricity production: Solar power to develop electricity.

The economics of energy: The price of various energy sources, its extraction, delivery and global market demand. What dictates energy policy of governments and societies?

Environmental impact of energy: Energy source for power plants (coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear, hydroelectric) affect the environment by pollution, degradation of natural resources and raising safety issues. New renewable sources (wind, solar power, geothermal) can be explored for such impact as well. And above everything is global warming     from emissions of certain gases.

4 parts needed for paper

Part 1. ENERGY BASICS: Science of energy. Different kind of energy, conservation laws, energy to do work from machines (motors), introduction of engines and electrical power.

Part 2. ELECTRIC POWER PRODUCTION. Law of induction and how to use different type of energy to get electrical power. Alternate ways to get electrical power such as solar cells. Note: wind power is also induction generator.

Part 3. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ENERGY. Pollution and degradation from burning different forms of energy     sources. Direct effect   on environment regarding global warming.

Part 4. ENERGY POLICY. What should be societal responsibility for using energy for (i) long term sustainability of     the planet, (ii) human health, (iii) global warming and (iv) economic viability and employment.
