TOPIC:

You are considering accepting a new position as a leader. However, prior to accepting the position, you are going to perform an organizational assessment. How would you design an organizational assessment to establish the current state of:                                                         shared governance,                                                                                                                                                                                                     culture of the organization,                                                                                                                                                                                        and safety of patient care?                                                                                                                                                                                        What do you expect to see in each of these areas if they are functioning well? What will you do to assess if each these areas are functioning well? Assume you are given permission to view meeting minutes, to view reports, to view policies and procedures, to interview staff and leaders, to observe staff working with patients and interacting with each other, etc.

RESPONSE 1

When designing my organizational assessment, consisted of identifying the goals and targets, data collection, analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the organization, observation from the opposite viewpoint, obtaining the tools for approach, and documentation (Hall & Roussel, 2020). This will highlight the organizational performance which is heavily weighted by the external environment, motivation, and capacity (Pang & Lu, 2018). To establish the current state of shared governance you must understand that shared governance is allowing the voice of employees to be heard in company decision-making (Weaver et al., 2018). The step to establishing the current state of shared governance within an organization is job satisfaction analysis, employee survey on thoughts about the company’s decision-making, and taking past records to see the effects of shared decision-making. To look at the company’s current culture I will look at team effectiveness, and organizational communication, I will also test some of their employees with random questions that will relate back to their skills creativity, conflict handling, unity, willingness to take risks, etc. Then finally to understand the current state of safety I will see what measures the organization has in place and look at reports to understand the level of efficiency these measures are running at. I will look to see if safety training is offered as well as run a survey among employees to see if they are aware of safety measures that are being provided to them. Ultimately, after I do all that and the areas are functioning well, I expect to see good communication among the organizational levels, organizational goals, proper training and guidance, and teamwork. If all these areas are functioning well, I will take the job since I know that I did my research and that this new environment and organization is a healthy one. As Christians, this is something we should do. Researching things and places before we step into them. The Lord has not only blessed us with discernment but with physical tools to be able to help guide healthy decision-making in an organization. Just like this verse states, “An intelligent heart acquires knowledge and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge” (English Standard Bible, 2001/2016, Proverbs 18:15). Being a Christian and seeking knowledge while having the discernment of God is powerful.

RESPONSE 2

In all professions, having a leader to take charge of things such as making sure all areas are running accordingly and making sure tasks are being completed effectively and efficiently are essential to an organizations ability to function and its success as our textbook states that “leadership is essential to influencing organization and population health outcomes (Hall & Roussel, 2022). Organizational assessments are very important for healthcare organizations as it helps to review the function of not only the organization itself but the staff and how they treat patients. To review the current state of shared governance, an assessment would be developed to review the tasks that are to be completed by different individuals and monitor whether the task load is equally spread to those that are qualified to complete the work. The culture of an organization can be very broad and can present different work environments as organizational culture “consists of common norms, values, and beliefs of individuals within that group” (Chalmers & Brannan, 2022). To asses this state, there would be a review of the staff that is apart of different sections, and interviews of all staff to get to know the different personalities and their cultures. Finally to review the safety of patient care, there would be assessments on the staff providing care, reviewing policies and watching the staff to ensure policies are being followed and patients are receiving proper care. The assessment of the state and safety of patient care is a very important assessment for healthcare organizations as an essential part of healthcare “patient safety is intrinsic to all healthcare professionals” (Shenoy, 2021). For healthcare organizations, it is important that all aspects of their organization can be run properly and provide the necessary care for those in need and doing as the Bible says that we “do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God” (Hebrews 13:16, English Standard Version).
