Registered Nurses have the moral and professional obligation to advocate for better legislative policies that affect their patients (ANA, 2016). The influence is meant to offer reliable and long-term solutions for the persistent problems in the healthcare industry. Due to their experiences in the industry and educational programs, most registered nurses can present evidence-based recommendations for change. This is an essential bit for all the decision-makers within the policymaking process.

All registered Nurses have the opportunity to join professional organizations and participate in policymaking (Burke, 2016). Professional organizations enhance the generations of energy and ideas through their proactive roles in advocacy. Individuals are strengthened within the environment and obtain society’s trust in advocating for the best for the patients. The American Nurses Association (ANA) is an excellent example of an organization actively involved in policy formulation by including the proposed policy in its primary documents. The policy is distributed to the educational programs for the students to learn and give their views on the policies.

Also, nurses have the essential leadership skills to fill the state offices. Once they are elected to the office, they significantly influence state policies in the healthcare domain. At this level, it is easier for the nurse leader to understand how the policymaking process develops and how to effectively push for the agenda for the approval of the policy by the decision-makers. This is done from the knowledge of the nursing challenges and the best solutions that promise a better future. Also, nursing leadership creates a unified power to push the agenda through reasonable means (Burke, 2016).

According to Jurns (2019), although professional organizations play a significant role in enhancing the policy advocacy process, most nurses lack the necessary skills and commitment to the policymaking process. This problem has been persistent despite the ongoing efforts by the organization administrators to build motivation through educating the participating members on their respective roles. To eradicate this barrier, the best solution lies in equipping the nurses with more knowledge and preparing them adequately when presenting their issues. This will enhance their confidence and ability to tackle each challenge during the process.

Often it is rare for nurses to run for public offices seats (Jurns, 2019). One of the most significant reasons for this is the frustrations they may go through during the election process. Also, the formal education provided for the nurses at the lower levels of education does not prepare them to handle the leadership responsibilities in the various offices. To overcome this barrier, there should be additional sensitization and engagement of the registered nurse over their power and influence, leading to changes for better service delivery.

There needs to be a clear distinction between the different cases of advocacy and how nurses contribute to each situation in the best way (Thomas & Joyner, 2016). With the right skills, the advocacy skills can be a success with proper understanding, interpretation, and policy formulation insights. Also, it is appropriate that the parties responsible for providing the resources for structural changes in the healthcare industry should be ardent to provide the necessary resources that will boost the ability of nurses to participate in the policy making process. It will help in creating motivation and passion that lead to the change the healthcare industry needs.
