Directions:
- Provide thoughtful, intelligent answers to four questions for your Frederick Douglass Discussion credit.
- Write, in your own words, ONE paragraph to address each discussion.
- Be sure you answer TWO of the questions posted for the Frederick Douglass discussion, and respond to TWO posts from other students as well. In all, you should provide answers for two, and respond to two (different questions from the ones for which you posted- for a total of four).
- Note that the auto-generated Canvas “Assignments” will say you have all ten to complete- follow these directions instead.
- Format for your ANSWERS (Original Discussion)
- Start your answer with a topic sentence that makes an argument to answer the question.
- Include historical evidence to make your point (use examples, specific details, quotations, etc. from Douglass’s narrative).
- Discount counterevidence when necessary.
- Wrap up your discussion with analysis of that evidence to reiterate your argument.
- Format for your REPLY (Response)
- Indicate that it is a REPLY (actually type the word “REPLY” at the beginning of your post).
- Discuss whether you agree or disagree and point out what you liked or didn’t like about the answer.
- Explain why.
- Use evidence to support your stance.
- Provide a QUOTATION from Douglass’s Narrative to support your stance.
- Even if you “completely agree” with your classmates’ post, for full credit, you will need to provide thoughtful insight with either a new example, further points to consider, or some other contribution that goes beyond repeating what they said.
- Follow Collin College Netiquette policy and remain polite and respectful.
- Properly formatted footnotes are hard to do in Canvas discussions, but please provide either the chapter or the page number of the quotation or other material that you need to cite when necessary. If you need to site a source other than Douglass’s narrative, then please give the full source information for those.
- Your discussion are due by April 25 at NOON. Post on Canvas by then.
- Spell Frederick Douglass’s name correctly (each and every time). Failing to do so will start your score with a 20% deduction.
- Trigger Warning: The reading contains graphic description of the harsh treatment experienced by slaves in the United States. This content is disturbing, so I encourage everyone to prepare themselves emotionally before proceeding. If you believe that the reading will be traumatizing for you, then you may arrange for an alternative assignment by contacting me.

THE QUESTION IS “According to Douglass, what did the institution of slavery do to Whites?”
