Reflective Writing

Shakespeare’s sonnets are romantic, and part of what makes them so timeless is that they look at how complicated and challenging love can be.  Love, he seems to be saying, is not always nice or easy.  In fact, when it comes to love, according to Shakespeare, you may need to take the good with the bad.

Choose one of Shakespeare’s sonnets from our list, and explain how it discusses one of the following themes: suspicion, jealousy, shame, lust, betrayal, desire, or gender.   How does Shakespeare explore this theme?  What might be the sonnet’s message or lesson about this theme?  What might Shakespeare be trying to teach us?
