Reader Response Analysis

Book : World War Z by Max Brooks

Your assignment is to write a reader response analysis of World War Z.  Identify one, or at most two interviewees from the book to focus on in your response. First, remember that reader response analysis is
not just about analyzing the text, it’s about analyzing it through the lens of your own life, values, and
experiences. So, it might help to start by asking yourself which interviewees or situations in the book were the
ones you related to the most. Which interviewees reminded you the most of yourself, or someone you know?
What situations reminded you of a similar situation from your own life?
Also remember that reader response analysis isn’t only about relating the work in question to you: you also
want to have something meaningful and substantive to say about the work itself. So, make sure to also focus on
an interview or interviews that raise issues worth analyzing and responding to.  For example, you might have something substantive
to say about:
● Jesika Hendriks and the taboo of cannibalism
● Paul Redecker and the ethics of the Redecker Plan
● Breckenridge Scott and his justification for making money selling Phalanx
● Roy Elliot and his justification for using propaganda to help the war effort
1. Begin with a short paragraph that introduces your response. It should briefly describe 1) which
interviewee(s) you’re planning to focus on, 2) what in particular you’re going to analyze, and 3) what it
all has to do with you, personally.
2. Dedicate your body paragraphs to responding to the interview or interviews you’ve chosen to focus on.
I want to know what you think about any pertinent issues raised by the interview(s), and how you view
those issues based on your own life, values, and experiences.
3. When analyzing your chosen interview(s) from the novel, be sure to provide evidence from World War
Z as support for your claims.
4. When analyzing your chosen interview(s) from the novel, be sure to provide evidence from your own
life as support for your claims.
5. End with a conclusion that clearly and briefly describes the overall value of your analysis of the novel.
Must Haves :● Introduce their thesis clearly at the beginning of their response while giving the reader an idea of how
they will present their analysis throughout the rest of the paper?
● Identify a specific interview or interviews from the book to respond to?
● Clearly state their response to the interview or interviews in question as well as why they had that
response?
● Support their response with specific examples taken from WWZ?
● Support their response by explaining their personal connection(s) to the material?
● Conclude the response convincingly, with a conclusion that isn’t just rephrasing of their introduction?
● Organize their response clearly, and use correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc.?
● Correctly cite and document WWZ and any optional outside sources so as to avoid plagiarizing?
Requirements : ● Your response should include at least three quotations from World War Z.
● You are not required to use outside sources. When quoting from or otherwise citing World War Z, you
only need to include the page number the quote or information came from.
● You are welcome to consult outside sources, including online sources. If an outside source is used, you must provide an in-text citation as well as a reference page at the end of your submitted document.
