We should have a 5th year of high school
To be a surprise for high school students these days, high school education in Ontario used to take five years and it has officially down to four since 2002. This new system, however, should be restored since it gives students more opportunities to individual circumstances.
The 5th year of high school is needed because it helps students to deal with different individual situations. There are 100 situations for 100 people. It could be medical, specialty, language, social, and etc, there is various kind of struggles. It might be a physical injury, which definitely requires a long time of rest and rehabilitation. It might be a mental problem that she/he is mentally suffering from just continuing their everyday lives. To give an example of the current situation, which is covid, thousands of people are losing jobs. There are some households that their parents, friends, or themselves suffering from financial difficulties and anxiety(corona blue). Many things can happen in the life of a teenager, and there are many reasons why a student might need to come back for a fifth year. Annie Kidder, who is the executive director of People for Education, says she was “seriously surprised to see a cap on high school credits.” High school students, she says, need flexibility. “[The budget] says it’s going to give them an incentive to plan well, but I’ve had teenagers and they don’t plan well… They need to have that flexibility in high school.”
The extra year of high school is necessary for students to change education plan. Some teens are staying in high school for an extra year for the 13th grade to earn associate degrees or substantial credits for free or at a reduced cost. “It allows students to get that head start in college in a way that provides support,” says Elisabeth Barnett, an expert on high school to college transition at Teachers College, Columbia University, on the emergence of five-year high schools. From my current high school, there are few 13th-grade students and one of them said to me that he is attending classes that are for his own interest. He was going to graduate after his 12th year because he had learned all credits. However, since he fell in love with photography, he changed the education plan and decided to study photography major. He attended the communication technology class with me and he was a sure good photographer and also a journalist. Also, an extra year is needed for the students who are taking the specific plan. For example, my high school has a special program called SHSM, and it is a program based on art. So a lot of students who are interested in art and preparing for the college of art attend our school for the program. A 13th grade could be a good chance for people who found their interest lately during their high school years and to revise their education path.
Finally, the 5th year of high school is needed for students to prepare for their future. 4 years is a tight time to even complete all 30 credits with good grades for a college and career. This society is quite strict about the “plan”. It feels like there is a certain invisible rules with a “good life”. The rules are such as- graduate high school with good grades, go to college/university at 19, graduate at 23, get a job within 25…and more. It is crucial that our generation should know there are countless paths after their high school. Also, they should experience lots of failure and success, so that they have a strength to overcome the sufferings when they are far from home with no neighbors. An extra year of high school is needed for students to experience different kinds of activities and find their own interest. They could do volunteers, clubs, part time job, hobbies, or even a trip. High school students need a phase to consider about their future while considering their talent, ability, finance, education plan and etc.
If schools care about student’s success and happiness, now is a time to show our z-generation that their future is being supported. An implementation of a 13th-grade system would provide more open paths with countless possibilities for them.
