Race and Intertextuality (analytical paper)

Instructions: Pick ONE of the topics below for an analytical paper. Based on the topic you choose, you need to find a MINIMUM of THREE critical sources on the topic. With the aid of at least THREE critical sources, write an analytical paper that is typed, double-spaced, and has a MINIMUM of 1,000 words. I will grade your papers with three criteria in mind: 1) a thoughtful and insightful thesis which responds to the topic question; 2) a sustained and coherent argument supporting that thesis; 3) effective and proper citing of the text(s) to illustrate your points. Prompt: 1. In the early 20th century, the blues was labeled “devil’s music” by devout Christians. Using some of the blues lyrics and songs in the hand out and others you find in your research, compare and contrast the blues musicians with some contemporary rap musicians and argue whether rappers are carrying on the blues’ devilish ways. Whatever you think the relationship between the blues and rap is, how do you evaluate the two genres and their impact on American popular culture and society? 2. However, perhaps the divisions between black and white, men and women, or folk and pop are not as simple as they first appear. After thinking about what the story says about these differences, develop your own evaluation of some contemporary white performer(s) making a career out of using black cultural forms and life: Vanilla Ice, The Beastie Boys, Eminem, Weird Al Jankovich, Madonna, Quentin Tarantino, etc. You could focus your research and argument on one white artist or group, or you could contrast and compare different ones to establish what you think are legitimate and illegitimate uses of black culture.
