Protestant Reformation: Calvinist & Anabaptist Theology

Prompt:

In a 5-page paper, compare the Schleitheim and Geneva confessions, analyzing the underlying conceptions about community and assumptions about the relationship between the religious community and the secular world. Use specific passages from the documents to contrast the “sect” of the Anabaptists and the “church” of the Calvinists. What underlying factor(s) account(s) for their different perspectives? Do you see any connections between the differing ideas of these two Protestant groups and their experience in the sixteenth century? You must not merely catalogue the similarities and differences between the two documents and the two groups. It’s not enough to show that they differ. You need to explain why. You must make an argument (thesis) and must prove that argument using the evidence of your two confessions.

Sources

To support your argument, you must use the texts of the Schleitheim and Geneva confessions (Both available online). The two confessions must be the main source of your evidence. And yes, you can use the Bible (New Revised Standard Version).

Citations All supporting materials must be cited properly and fully. Use parenthetical references, rather than footnotes, with reference to the original page number of the book from which the PDFs were copied. Example: (Geneva Confession, 121).

Format

The paper must be 5 pages long. It must be double-spaced, with margins no wider than one inch, and you must use a standard font (Palatino, Times, Courier, or the like), sized at 10 or 12 points.
