Procedural Memory (Muscle Memory)

Implicit Memory is a form of long-term memory in which behavior is affected by prior experience without that experience being consciously recollected.  It involves memory of how to do things unconsciously and automatically rather than consciously remembering facts.  A subtype of implicit memory is procedural memory, which involves memory for skills.  One of the most widely studied areas of procedural memory is muscle memory.  Muscle memory can best be described as a type of movement with which the muscles become familiar over time.  It is an important component in activities that involve the body’s muscles.  Define and discuss the concept of muscle memory as it relates to long-term memory (include an overview of implicit and procedural memory).  What biological mechanisms are believed to contribute to the development of muscle memory?  Why is it believed to be an unconscious process?  Identify and discuss a specific activity that involves muscle memory, such as athletics, weight training, music, art.  Chose an activity that involves muscle memory that you currently participate in or have participated in at some point in the past.  Then, discuss your involvement in this activity as it relates to muscle memory.  Be specific and relate your discussion to your own experience.  Finally, how can attitude and “confidence issues” interfere with muscle memory (relate to your own experiences)?
