poetry project

Poetry ProjectThis assignment will be an exploration of one children’s poet. Please read the guidelines below carefully.Steps: 1 Select a poet from the list below. I’ve purposely not included Shel Silverstein on the list as he’s a poet many students are familiar with. For this assignment, I want you to “get-to-know” some other poets. 2 Read as many poems as you can find by the poet. Some of these poets write poems for adults, so be sure to concentrate on those poems written for children. You must read at least twelve poems total. Please list in a document the titles you read.  Certainly, you may read more than twelve; poems, twelve is the minimum. 3 Then, in two paragraphs, write about what you noticed or learned about poetry from reading the works of this poet. What is something that stood out to you? Something that caught your eye? Something you observed or perceived from reading these poems. Be sure to cite specific poems or parts of poems that you read in this section. 4 Next, I want you to write an original, children’s poem that is in some way prompted by the work you read. Please include your poem and explain in one paragraph how it is inspired by the work of the poet. 5 Finally, create an original poetry prompt or exercise for children to try based on the poetry you read. An example of what I mean is the Small Poems assignment whereby I used Valerie Worth’s poems as a springboard for a poetry exercise. Poets:If there is another children’s poet you’d like to do, please let me know.Jack Prelutsky                                               Marilyn SingerMary Ann Hoberman                                   Jane Yolen    Francisco X.
