I need a action research project with 5 students. 4 Hispanic students and 1 African. ALl students attend inner city school and recieve free and reduce lunch. ALl students are Ell students tthat are struggling to learn how to read. We have pretest, the data results from the pretest indicated that students need to worked on rhyming words, phoneme blending, segmentation addition, deletion, and substitiution. The teachers previous students were interviewed and all iindcated they do teach phonological awareness but beign that students had language barriers they were slow to learn how to read. I used Elkonin boxes, stretching the sounds, and nursery rhymes as some of my instructional strategies. Students made slow grow, I gave students a running record as preassessment, Readign A-Z phonolgoical preassessment and post assessment. Students were tested in phonolgocial awareness, as a result of the preassessment we focused on phoneme blending, segmenation, addition, deletion, substitiution. I used nursery rhymes to work on rhyming words and word families. I interviewed parents, 3 students parents read to them at home in Spanish, I parent reads to child in English and one parent doesn’t read to their child at all. ALl students are reading below 2nd grade level, all students are ELL accoording to their WIDA language assessment. ALl students live below the poverty level. Students made slow gains in reading and now beginning to blend CVC words as a result of all the phonolgical awareness lessons.
