PERTAINING TO SPORTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT

Case study 1

The traffic flow within your athletic department is complicated, because it involves the simultaneous movement of people and equipment. Proper traffic flow minimizes congestion and confusion. CSUDH wants to remodel its sports facilities (all sports included). Select one sport (ball park, basketball gym, soccer field, tennis courts..). Review changes you would make to improve attendance, participation, foot traffic to the benefit of CSUDH. Think of designs that encourage multiple lanes of traffic, parking areas and off-ramps. Planning for a large equipment room for example will provide the necessary space for gear to get organized and ready to move. This will keep high-traffic areas like adjacent hallways or the gym more open. Ensure your designs will accommodate occasional “rush-hour” traffic needs.

Your mission:

Take a look at the current map of CSUDH sports facilities. Review the existing state of the art in the sport you’ve chosen. Draw a proposal proposal on a paper and take a picture of it then paste it on the word document. Finally write a description explaining what issues your proposal helps resolving and/or explain what improvements it brings in terms of attendance and overall experience for students, faculty and alumni. Use of visual information is a plus.

Case study 2

Bridgestone Arena is home to the NHL’s Nashville Predators and also regularly holds regional and national basketball tournaments. Numerous concerts, family shows and ice performances take place at the venue, which has also hosted the Country Music Association Awards since 2006. Bridgestone Arena was named “2014 Arena of the Year” by Pollstar Magazine, and has a seating capacity of 17,100 for hockey and up to 20,000 for concerts. The arena will host the 2016 NHL All-Star Game.

Challenge:

Maintenance is becoming more cumbersome as the lights required frequent replacement due to shifting color temperatures and decreased lumen output. Energy costs are a growing concern.

Your mission:

You are hired as a consultant to offer alternative solutions to the facility manager. Explain how you would look at the facility and implement cost saving solutions in different area consuming lots of energy or having an important carbon footprint. You will identify the typical costs involved for energy in a stadium and make recommendations accordingly. You will summarize your research and show the information collected so that you can make proposals based on benchmarking.
