Music, Memory, and Identity
Ask an older family member or friend (this can be a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle,
older sibling, professor, etc.) the following question:
“Describe the music you were listening to when you were my age.”
Ask follow-up questions, as necessary, being careful to avoid leading questions. Gather
from the interviewee as much information as possible regarding the style of music,
specific pieces, how the interviewee related to those pieces personally (including specific
memories that he or she has associated with those pieces), and the role of those examples
in society and history. Write a brief essay on your findings and conclusions from the
interview.
