Module 6 Reading Reaction

1. In 2-4 sentences, tell us what surprised you while reading this piece. If nothing surprised you, tell us why.2. In the assigned chapter from his book Proxies, Dylan Mulvin argues that the fact that the presence of an issue of Playboy “was unremarkable in the USC lab” is what, in fact, makes it so noteworthy: “it is remarkable for this taken-for-grantedness” (p. 77).

What does he mean by this? What does it mean to call something remarkable or notable simply for how taken-for-granted it is? And how might we extend that insight to other cases or examples in the study of gender and information technology?

3. Reflecting on both the Mulvin reading and the videos covering the case of “the Lena image,” what does this collision between pornography and image processing research tell us about the cultural assumptions around gender and technology? More specifically, what does it tell us about the roles particular gendered bodies or people (like “men” or “women”) are expected to play in the design and development of information technologies?

4. Briefly (max. 6 sentences), let us know one question or point of confusion you have after completing the module. In other words: what concepts, ideas, or arguments from the material (readings, videos, and/or other module elements) remain unclear or “muddy” for you?
