1. Langston Hughes’s work is often seen as characteristic of the Harlem Renaissance. Choose three Hughes poems to focus on in detail. Offer a close analysis of these poems and their themes or messages and show whether and how these poems are characteristic of the Harlem Renaissance as a movement. Write an essay where you explain how three of Hughes poems are characteristic of the Harlem Renaissance. You will have a clear thesis statement that states how the poems fit the Harlem Renaissance movement as a whole. You will support your thesis statement by having strong body paragraphs with textual evidence from all of the poems. You should also incorporate outside sources where appropriate. Each body paragraph should have an in-text citation and a specific example from one of the poems to prove your thesis statement. This specific essay will require FIVE sources since each poem will be listed as a separate source. a. You are assigned to write a formal MLA-style essay that involves textual evidence. In a major composition, you will analyze, synthesize, and evaluate literary works and/or relate assigned literature to other disciplines and to broader human concerns. You do not retell the story. You will be making an argument of some kind about the text you are writing about. This claim/argument should be original. b. You are expected to include in your essay at least three outside sources. One of those sources should be the short story itself. The other two sources should be credible outside sources, such as articles from AVL, Owlcation, .edu, or .org sites. One prompt does require more sources; therefore, read each prompt carefully. Each body paragraph should include a quote from the short story/poems. Outside sources should be incorporated where appropriate. c. You will have at least three (but probably more, especially if you are using multiple poems or stories to answer your question) sources listed on your Works Cited Page. Remember all stories and poems have to be listed separately even if they are by the same author. List only those sources that you have cited in the body of your essay. Please refer to an MLA guide for help on proper citation and documentation as you will be graded on both. d. Consider using the Reference section of the library or an AVL source for an outside source. Owlcation is an acceptable website as well as any .edu or .org websites. Any other websites must be approved. e. Your Works Cited Page needs to be the last page of your essay. You will list your sources in alphabetical order and double space the entire document. Do not forget to indent all lines except for the first one in each listed entry. Refer to MLA help for information. f. Your essay needs to be 2 ½ -3 pages long (2 ½ = 2 full pages and a half page on the third page). You will need five full paragraphs (five to ten sentences make a paragraph; again, you should double-space the entire document). You do not need an outline. g. Your first paragraph should contain a thesis statement that answers the question being asked. You will receive a zero if you do not answer the question prompts. Some choices may have several questions. Please make sure you respond to them all. h. Remember, your essay must be written in present tense, third person point of view. Do not use “I” or “you” in the essay. i. Refer to rubric for grading requirements. j. You will begin with a header such as below: Krystal Williams Mrs. Nix Eng.252 Date Response to Question 1
