This week we’ll take a voyage to briefly explore experiential learning. Experience… We all have it! How does our role as perceiving, living beings impact adult teaching and learning? We can gain insight from our own experiences, as well as, each others’.
Most college/university professors are adjunct/part-time professors who have regular full time jobs…in the field they are teaching!! This is important to you, as the student, because you are learning from the folks that are the experts and have the experience to pass onto their students. Many of you are already working in the field that you are pursuing your degree in. Your experiences and knowledge are crucial to learning for yourself and your peers.

Dewey and Experiential Learning Experiential Learning Theory.
- Set up the experience by introducing learners to the topic and covering basic material that the learner must know beforehand (the video scenario as well as discussion).
- Engage the learner in a realistic experience that provides intrigue as well as depth of involvement (mock trial).
- Allow for discussion of the experience including the happenings that occurred and how the individuals involved felt (discussion afterwards).
- The learner will then begin to formulate concepts and hypotheses concerning the experience through discussion as well as individual reflection (discussion afterwards, but also could be done with journaling).
- Allow the learners to experiment with their newly formed concepts and experiences (interpreting current conflict and conflict resolution scenario).
- Further reflection on experimentation (discussion but could also be done through journaling).
My thought is to have various actions or statements from various political leaders. Then provide 2 potential names such as Trump and Biden and let the student pick which one they believe the statement or action is attributed to. Then present the correct answer and discuss the findings and how the student used their personal knowledge and/or bias to select the correct or incorrect answer. If incorrect discuss further how the student might learn from the new information presented.
– An interesting approach, Tara. This proposed project/experiment… do you have a hypothesis on how it would turn out?
