Assignment due Sunday, November 13, 2022 by 11:00pm Aim: The primary aim of this assignment is to introduce you to the concept of designing and executing an experiment, justifying your choices with evidence or logic, analyzing and using valid metrics of a psychological construct, and effectively communicating ideas. The secondary aim is to illustrate ways of implementing strategies that may improve your own practices in your academic or personal lives. In Unit 4 we have been learning about inhibitory control. We have also learned about ways to measure it. This assignment will provide you with an opportunity to improve your inhibitory control. As with Assignments 1 and 2, you will implement a strategy over 2-3 days, and then you will write a final assessment of your strategy and its outcomes. Please read the instructions below carefully. Task: Identify something specific in your own life, academic or social, where you would like to improve your inhibitory control. Consider how you rely on inhibitory control in this area of your life. Come up with one strategy that would improve your inhibitory control as it relates to the situation that you want to improve in your own life. For example, you might struggle with constantly picking up and checking your smart phone every few minutes. Make sure you can explain how your plan specifically relates to the situation you want to improve. Apply this strategy in your own life over at least 2-3 days. Spend 20 minutes each day to reflect on your experience in a journal (you might consider writing about it in your Writing Journals for Expressive Clarity!). Be sure to also reflect on the experience once you are done applying the new strategy over 2-3 days. Use these reflections to help you write up your final assessment of your strategy. (See Submission Requirements below.) It is important to measure your efforts to change. So be sure to do the following: Before implementing your strategy, take an inhibitory control test (for instance, the Stroop, or Flanker test – or another test as appropriate to your strategy) to obtain a baseline score. Implement your strategy for 2-3 days. Take notes about it. Take the same inhibitory control test on the 4th day to see if there is any difference in your overall inhibitory control. Your Submission: Write a summary of the experience which includes discussion and assessment of your strategy in no more than 500 words. Make sure you include all the following in your summary: A clear definition of inhibitory control An explanation of the situation that relies on inhibitory control A full description of the intervention with justification and analysis of how it is related to inhibitory control An explanation of the benefits from improving your inhibitory control in this area of your life. An explanation of how you measured your success using a valid measure explaining why this reflects inhibitory control and why it is an appropriate measure in this case. A reflection on how successful your strategy was based on your measurement and experience. Be sure to link your measures and outcomes to your initial description of inhibitory control Evidence based arguments. Learning Outcomes: You will be graded on the following learning outcomes: #MeasureCogCapacities Use contextually appropriate, valid, and reliable tools to measure cognitive capacities. #DescribeCogCapacities Clearly describe cognitive capacities, such as executive functions, and their importance in real world situations. #ImproveCogCapacities Design and implement methods to successfully improve one’s own and/or other’s cognitive capacities.
