The purpose of the final project is to identify trends in the past and present that have influenced sexual attitudes and behaviors within the United States, while also considering how these concepts differ from those in other cultures. For this project, you will examine how upbringing, culture, and religion influence sexual attitudes and behaviors.
Upbringing can include your age, where you are in the birth order, your parents’ marital status, socioeconomic status, and home environment.
Culture can include what schools you attended, what community organizations you are involved in, your race, ethnicity, or national identity.
Religion can include spiritual beliefs, organized religious practices, absence of religion, and how religion connects to political institutions in your culture.
Consider how one’s upbringing, culture, and religion affect the sexual attitudes and sexual behaviors of the United States. As you examine these impacts, choose another country and compare their attitudes and behaviors toward those of the United States. What is similar about the two countries? What is different? Explain what might be influencing some of those differences, and account for change over time in both countries’ attitudes and behaviors.
Examples of attitudes include values about sex, perspectives on sexuality, what sexual behaviors are deemed appropriate, in what context it’s okay to discuss sexuality, what is considered human sexuality.
Examples of behaviors include what types of sexual activities people engage in, how soon people become sexually active, how often activities occur.
