Thinkers such as al-Afghani, Abduh, Rida, and Amin responded to the rapidly-changing modern moment with their own radical ideas about Islam and modernity. What struck you as the most radical of their ideas, and what surprised you? Why?

What do you make of late-19th century Zionism and its emergence from the European experiences of European Jews? How does this fit into what you know about broader European political and social ideologies of the time? What is missing from the discussions around Zionism, up to this point in our class thus far?
