Answer THREE of the the following questions. You can be brief- one detailed paragraph-, but you MUST use evidence from the story/poem to prove your assertions and get full credit

  1. The last line spoken by the narrator in Bartleby the Scrivener, the novella by Herman Melville, is “Ah Bartleby! Ah humanity!” What realization has the narrator reached in that line? How has the narrator transcended from his opening statement, “the easiest way of life is the best”? Speculatively, will the narrator revert back to the imprimis “the easiest way of life is best” following the death of Bartleby or will he continue transcending?
  2. What does the middle-aged waiter mean by “nothing(ness)” in the short-story A Clean Well Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway? How does the character exhibit, or reveal, personality characteristics that relate to the American Heritage Dictionary definition of existentialism (be specific) while also maintaining his humanity? Is the middle aged waiter providing a clean well lighted cafe for others, for himself or for both? Explain.
  3. In the poem An Irish Airman Foresses His Death , by William Butler Yeats, our pilot details his motivations for embracing his fate. Explain how the pilot in the poem comes to personify the definition of existentialism provided by The American Heitage Dictionary (be specific).  Clearly the pilot is selfish but explain how selfishness can be considered a good thing under these circumstances?Does the pilot’s reasoning ultimately lead to rewarding or a disappointing life?
  4. Why does The Misfit wait until the grandmother touches his shoulder before he shoots her three times in the chest in the final stages of the story A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor? What does The Misfit mean when he says to Bobby Lee, “She would of been a good woman…if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life”? What does the grandmother’s “smile” suggest at the end of the story after she has been killed? Does she feel like she has won, or has The Misfit won in there battle for control?
