Find something in the room where you are at this moment and define it in terms of complexity and emergence. Be sure to address the four defining features of a complex entity that we discussed in class and that you (hopefully) read about in the article “On Complexity and Emergence.” Describe in detail the emergent features that arise from your object.
Topics might be things as simple as coffee, or your hand, or a light bulb, or a piece of art, or a book, or a chair. (Don’t use objects that are the products of chemistry, like water or alcohol, because those are a bit too easy. And don’t include “Goldilocks conditions” as one of the four defining features.)
Be creative but hold to the ground rules of the assignment defined above. Try not to be too brief – this exercise can be huge if you think deeply about it.
