Instructions Watch the Discovery Channel documentary First In Human, Episode 2 “Treatment”
This documentary series follows four patients through their experience with a first in human trial: Bo Cooper under treatment for relapsed leukemia; Anita McAllister who has metastatic melanoma; Deidra Williams who suffers from Sickle Cell Anemia; and Lucy Wiese who has Job’s Syndrome. Select one of the patents to focus on throughout the documentary. Take notes on their experience as you watch the documentary and keep the questions below in mind as you watch.

1. As you watch this episode of the documentary make notes of all the ways the content you read about in the 3 assigned chapters (especially study design and informed consent) this week link up with documentary.
2. After you make your notes, select one or two of these connections to more deeply reflect on, and answer the following questions in your discussion post:
a) Identify and explain the specific ethical dimensions from the reading that were represented in the documentary. Select at least two of elements and explain how the course content connects to the patient’s experience.
b) Summarize your selected patient’s experience. Explain how and why this ethical dimension is important and how your selected patient experienced it (if possible) or how this element was portrayed in the documentary.
c) In your opinion, does first in human research meet the rigorous practical and ethical demands articulated in the readings from the past two weeks? Explain your reasoning.
