When I grade, I will be looking for: Following directions & professional presentation (including no typos, or spelling errors) The appropriate length of paper Quality of topic and analysis (writing, grammar, observation, analysis) Care should be taken when preparing a paper for a university course with a Literary Designation. Learning to write is an extremely important part of your education, and I grade your writing and the content of your papers. As college students, you should be acquainted with certain grammatical basics. Proofread your papers carefully for spelling errors. When in doubt, consult a dictionary. I will allow three (3) spelling errors per paper. Additional errors may result in the lowering of your paper grade. Use your computer spell check, though it may miss proper nouns or words correctly spelled but wrongly used (i.e., their or there). Please avoid sexist language, a passive voice, awkward constructions, stringy sentences, and other acts of egregious prose. Avoid the use of the following weak words: this, also, very, and interesting. Don’t gush (Awesome! Incredible! Great!). You are writing a college paper, not a blog post. Do not be too informal in your choice of phrases. Avoid clichés, slang, and excessive repetition. Research Paper Resources Your bibliographies can include not only books but major periodical articles as well. The class textbook may be helpful to your paper but does not count as one of the five sources you will need to gather for the bibliography. Short online entries written by bloggers are not appropriate or acceptable sources. Do not procrastinate. This is the fun part!
