ENG 111
Spring 2022
Final Exam
The Assignment
Have you ever felt as proud as the father in “Pride” who watches his son graduate from
high school? What or whom were you proud of? What does that kind of pride feel like?
With the essay “Pride” and these questions in mind, write a two-page properly formatted
essay (550-600 words or two full double-spaced pages) on feeling extremely proud in relation to
another person. You may write about a family member, a relative, a friend, or even a historical
figure (that is, a well-known person).
Describe in detail who that person is and why and how that person made you proud.
What qualities does your subject share with the father (or any other person or persons mentioned
in “Pride”?
With “Pride,” you might want to think of the son’s graduation from high school as
something his father may or may not achieved and factor that into your thinking here. In your
final exam essay, you should quote or paraphrase from “Pride” at least two times. Note
that the version of “Pride” in the final exam folder on Blackboard has page numbers at the top
right of each page. When you use a quotation or paraphrase from “Pride,” be sure to insert a
correct in-text citation. If you use author’s name in text, use only page number in parentheses.
Also remember that the introduction to a quote has a simple format—He said,—not The article
stated….
Use the sample research paper in the MLA Style Guide on Blackboard for help with intext citations and quotations.
You have until 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2022 to complete the final exam and turn it in
by email (see below).
