Please note that the paper should be written in the context of Organization Communication and requires research in greater depth and the application context.
Components
Course Content and Format
Introduction and relevance. Your paper should introduce your topic and the context of your application. Here, you will be expected to highlight the relevance of the subject in practice and describe how it relates to life in the modern workplace. This component of the paper should go beyond stating the subject of your paper and should aim to introduce your topic, assuming an audience of other practitioners or scholars.
Literature review and prior work. Following your introduction, provide a literature review and summary of prior work focused on your subject. You are strongly encouraged to utilize scholarly resources, the Miller text, and peer-reviewed articles to review work that has been done on this subject. Other high-quality resources, such as reputable media, are appropriate as well, especially when highlighting the relevance of your subject. While outlining this section, consider answering questions such as, “What work has already been done on this topic?” and “Are there advances in our understanding of this topic that have been made recently?”
Development and support. Throughout the manuscript, your paper should support claims with reasoning, logic, and sources. In your introduction, development and support may take the form of expanding on the relevance of the topic while persuading the reader to understand the importance of our focus on this subject. While reviewing and summarizing literature, development and support may take the form of explaining not only what a previous study found, but also why those findings are important and relevant. In sections focused on practical application, development and support may take the form of explaining why a given theory or research finding applies to a given practical application while referencing resources.
Formatting and organization. The content of your paper should be thorough, logical, and thoughtful, and incorporate key concepts from our course through the lens of practical application. Your paper should be well organized and include fundamentals such as an introduction, preview statements, thesis statement, and a conclusion. You should use this paper to showcase your best-written work. Arguments should be clear, the paper should be well organized, and your writing should be free of typos, spelling, and grammatical errors. Please use 12-point font, double spacing, and APA formatting for all references.
Practical Application
Application of content. Your paper should directly apply course content and literature from your research to a specific practical context. As we have discovered this semester, many theories, processes, and dynamics can apply to the same real-world organization. Draw on a variety of content and research and apply this knowledge to practice.
Exposition and location in practice. Provide an appropriate exposition of the practical context you are exploring. Here, give the reader a thorough explanation of what practical application you will be focusing on. If you use a single organization as a case study, describe that organization highlighting its appropriateness as a locus of application. If you focus on a process or dynamic that applies to multiple organizations, be sure to give the reader a thorough description of that practical context. Overall, aim to locate your scholarly subject within the context of a specific practical application.
Exploring perspectives in practice. While exploring theory in practice, draw on diverse perspectives, and consider alternative explanations for the applications you make. For example, if you argue that strategic ambiguity is a critical tool for preserving diverse perspectives in technology start-ups, consider what classical organization theorists may have to say about this claim. As we have explored this semester, many organizational forms, processes, tools, and solutions do not work equally well for all people. Consider this element in your paper and reflect on the diversity of human experience through your writing.
Conclusion and future work. Your paper should conclude with a section that synthesizes your claims and support. Here, consider commenting on the strengths of your findings while also acknowledging the limitations. How can you extend your work in the future?
