In a well-constructed initial response applying the knowledge you gained from the module readings, as well as your own experiences, discuss the following question:

Privacy is of great concern not only for IT professionals but also for anyone using the Internet. For example, a simple purchase online initiates a process for collecting information regarding their username, password, address, telephone number, etc. Often, this information is sold to marketers, many times without the specific permission of the user.

Defend your position and indicate whether you feel an ethical or legal issue is present.

Post at least 150 words as your initial response and respond meaningfully to at least two classmates.
Classmate 1: This discussion topic reminded me of a last week tonight’s episode with John Oliver. In this  episode about data brokers, he shed a light that there are not enough governmental enforcements in place for data protection. Our information is so easy to attain that he actually was able to pin point sites that were visited by people inside the white house. Literally saying do something to protect the American people against data brokers or I will release the names of the individuals who visited these websites. Our information is not protected and easily accessible. There is definitely not enough legislative protection for this issue. It is absolutely a call for concern and action. It is not just adults using the internet .My main concern is the targeting of minors on the web. Information about our children is not just being sold to marketers. Hopefully this is a topic that will keep gaining traction as it has in the past year, There has to be laws and regulations placed on data collection practices

classmate 2: When I think about my personal information being easily accessible and sold without my knowledge or my consent to marketers, it’s a serious legal issue for me. For instance, I had an incident where I was online searching for a mattress, and I had stumbled upon a mattress company from someone I follow on YouTube. However, I was not ready to buy a mattress at that moment whereas I was bargaining shopping online. So, a week goes by, and I received a coupon from the mattress company at my home address. Let’s just say I was furious because I did not put my personal address on their site, nor did I live chat with anyone. This felt like an invasion of my privacy that a company not located in the city I reside in has access to my personal home address.

Meanwhile, there definitely needs to be a law enacted to protect consumers from marketers selling our information. My concern is selling people’s personal information can subject them to harm or danger from people we don’t even know that’s using technology against us. Besides if health professionals are held accountable by HIPPA ACT where they must disclose a person’s personal information, and the person must give his or her consent for medical information to be released. Then marketers should not be exempt for being held accountable with selling people’s personal information for profit without their knowledge or consent. We have several social media platforms and different avenues for marketers to advertise products and services, so there is no need for marketers to take invasive approaches to obtain a person’s personal information to generate revenue. If a marketer has to sale people’s personal information to gain business; subsequently, the marketer does not deserve a loyal customer or a future customer business because the marketer gained access to the person’s personal information in a disloyal manner.
