Demonstrate essentials of management in practice

Assignment is to watch a popular movie or documentary that you choose. The movie should have some element of management-related themes/concepts, or demonstrate essentials of management in practice. Write a 2- page review, covering 4 main things:

  1. A very brief synopsis of the movie (so I understand the basic plot and characters).
  2. Connect elements in the story to concepts, techniques, and practices from the text in our class. Identify the management connection(s).
  3. Identify how the story outcomes could have been improved (if they could have been improved) with different management practices or strategies, or by implementing some organizational change. If there was no way to improve the situation, explain why.
  4. Did you like the move, and/or recommend it? Why or why not? You can go beyond management here.

Hopefully you will pick a movie you like, and/or one that inspires you, or makes you laugh. Documentaries are ok. I encourage you to pick a movie that seems management-related but you haven’t watched before. Here’s a starting list with ideas for some business-oriented movies, but there are LOTS more out there to choose from (note- it should be a movie, not a TV series). I’m very open to selections, as long as you make the case:

  • FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened
  • The Wolf of Wall Street
  • The Smartest Guys in the Room
  • The Devil Wears Prada
  • Glengarry Glen Ross
  • Office Space
  • The Founder
  • The Inventor: Out For Blood In Silicon Valley
