Current Issues, Bias & Arguments?

Background: For our final unit, we have discussed the topic of bias and how it shows up in our everyday lives. Many people are divided on so many issues, and everyone wants to uncover any biases that might lead to change in laws and policies throughout the country.

Prompt: For this final essay, you will write an essay examining any of the many issues that are affecting the American legal, economic and judicial system currently. 

Some issues to consider:

• Roe v. Wade

• Bail Reform

• Student Loan Forgiveness

• Mental Health in the Penal System

• Mandatory Minimum Sentencing

• Marijuana Legalization (Federal)

• Sexual Harrassment in the Workplace

•Gender Wage Inequality

• Hair Discrimination 

The Scope: Since this essay does not have a particular “question” that you are answering, as the researcher, you will need to create and answer your own research question that pertains to the issue you will address in the paper. 

Below are some Exploration & Planning Questions to Get You Started:

Who benefits from the issue? Who does not benefit?

Should this issue pass or not pass (if it is a law, or proposition) and why?

What biases are evident in the implementation of this issue?

What if any is the solution to this issue? Any alternatives?

Guidelines:  

The essay should be at least 7-10 pages, have an arguable thesis, incorporate detailed support, use polished expression, follow MLA format, and include a Works Cited page. 

The body of the essay should include support and quotes from sources. At least 8 Quotes

Must include at least Four Outside Sources from a Scholarly Journal, Book, or Periodical. 

Use the They Say, I Say templates section to introduce and analyze points; summarize texts; and incorporate, explain, and analyze evidence.  

Consider and include a counter argument(s) to your thesis and offer your refutation or concession in response.
