Create a tightly scripted presentation arguing for the adoption of a specific initiative with societal impact (i.e. Corporate Social Responsibility).
Regardless of your opinion of CSR or its utility, CSR appears to be something that broader society currently expects of business. The good news is there is a multitude of ways that a company can have a positive impact on society while also furthering its interests as a business.
The Prompt
You work for a major multinational corporation (your choice of company and industry, it can be a hypothetical company.) For its own reasons, the company is interested in launching a corporate social responsibility campaign. You are one of several people who have been asked to help pick an initiative for the company to become more publicly involved with. To do this you must create a presentation on the topic that compels the company to pursue the initiative.
The Audience
You will make the presentation for a committee at work, comprised of your peers, who will be allotted funds for various CSR initiatives. You must convince this committee to contribute to your initiative over that of your peers as funding is limited. Imagine you are in your chosen professional field. If you’re in finance talk to your fellow finance professionals, marketing, logistics, management, etc. Find a need in society that relates to your future (or past/present) profession and that’s your audience. The aim of your presentation is to compel your audience to devote funds to your initiative.
The Topic
Your presentation is an opportunity for you to advocate for a passion you have relative to a business’s interaction with the society in which it exists. It’s wide open to any and all causes important to you, with the understanding that the presentation you create should advance the well-being and flourish of humanity in some form or fashion (as this is the aim of ethics). Furthermore, you must make the case for why this initiative makes sense for your company (e.g., tackles an issue relevant to the business model and/or its stakeholders).
The issue may be broad enough to apply to business as a whole, but should then be applied to the company’s specific situation. Possible jumping off points include:
Sustainability managementAnimal & Environmental RightsHealthcare coverage and benefitsProduct development and stewardshipIndividuals and intellectual propertyMonopolies and monopolistic practicesWage disparitiesEquity and inclusion initiativesPolitical involvementOr any issue in which business is not contributing to solving an issue they ‘should’ be helping with (normative position). For example, rather than a presentation advocating for environmental sustainability — start there and move to a presentation for making the company’s production operations carbon neutral. Start big, get specific.
The Format
Your presentation will be recorded and must be in the form of a Pecha Kucha, a brief, highly structured presentation format. The Pecha Kucha format (Links to an external site.) consists of showing 20 slides for 20 seconds each while telling a compelling story, in this case, to motivate your listeners to action and persuade them to a point of view. It’s a particular format for an “elevator pitch” of an idea, granted 6 minutes 40 seconds is a long elevator ride. This is a strict format — deviations will earn point deductions. Your slides should not have text on them but should be an image. Pecha Kucha uses pictures to tell stories. PLEASE USE THE SPEAKER NOTES AS A WAY TO WRITE DOWN WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID IN THE RECORDING FOR EACH SLIDE. SOMEWHAT AS A TRANSCRIPTION Below is an example of a rough template to help you understand how 20 slides could be used to complete this assignment.
2-3 slides to introduce the problem (10,000-foot view)1-2 slides to talk about your business, e.g. introduce the company you work for (or company you are using)2-3 slides to talk about why this issue should matter to your company3-5 slides to convey compelling concerns about the specifics of this issue (100-foot view)3-4 slides to talk about possible solutions to this problem2-3 slides to discuss precisely what your business should do, including resources needed, costs, and trade-offs2-3 slides to communicate possible benefits of this action (strengths utilized or built through the initiative)1 final slide to sum it up and bring it home.Depending on your proficiency with the digital technology I suggest you get started on this project sooner rather than later. Keep in mind to adequately complete this project a student should have reviewed the material from week four on CSR.
Some suggestions are to do it in PowerPoint (Links to an external site.) (though if you do this I advise turning it into a “video” to prevent technical issues), and record it in Zoom (Links to an external site.), or to use PreziOnline (Links to an external site.). If you’ve got other software to create videos (like Doodly) just make sure your presentation fits the Pecha Kucha format and your file can be uploaded into Canvas.
AGAIN PLEASE USE THE SPEAKER NOTES AS A WAY TO WRITE DOWN WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID IN THE RECORDING FOR EACH SLIDE. SOMEWHAT AS A TRANSCRIPTION! THANK YOU
